4th September is Taekwondo day. Aminé just has done his second performance in Korea, and we met in a Taekwondo gym the next day of the day. Taekwondo uses hands and feet without any weapons to cross offense and defense each other, so it is often compared to willow as it emphasizes physical training and mental discipline. It makes you think naturally and flexibly like the attitude. But it looks fierce and upright, so if you find it in his music, you will quickly find something in common.
9월 4일은 태권도의 날이다. 아미네가 한국에서의 꼭 두 번째 공연을 치렀고, 우린 그다음 날 태권도장에서 만났다. 태권도는 아무 무기 없이 손과 발을 이용해 공격과 방어를 교차하며 신체 단련과 정신 수양을 강조하는 만큼 수양버들에 비유한다. 자연스럽고 유연한 태도만큼 그런 사고를 하게 만든다는 것. 하지만 그 형세만큼은 매서워 꼿꼿하니, 이를 또 아미네의 음악에서 찾자면 금세 공통점을 찾으리라. 우리의 아미네가 품새를 취했다.

I guess when I was like 8 or 10 I wasn’t the most confident kid so when I started to do taekwondo it made me so much more confident. Honestly the number one thing I took away from Taekwondo at that age was respect and the amount of honor you had to have while doing it. I had to bow to my teacher, if I would talk during it I would hear a yell from my teacher, it wasn’t just like your traditional ‘go to detention’ it was very strict and I liked that. (I didn’t like it at the time but I like it now and I see how it’s influenced my life subconsciously.) I love taekwondo so much just because I got to break a bunch of wood and I was winning my first ever trophies. I had never won trophies in my life at that time. So I got some of my first. I got a silver medal, I got a bronze medal, I got one gold I think. I gotta find them. I don’t know where they are.(Smiling)
초가을 장마, 태권도장, 아미네. 이런 조합은 두 번 다시 없겠다. 어릴 때 태권도를 배웠다고 하는데, 사실인가. 무술은 사람을 강하게 만드는 힘을 지녔고, 나는 그걸 믿는다.
내가 8세인가 10세였을 때다. 자신감이 넘치던 아이가 아니었는데 태권도를 시작하고 훨씬 용감해졌다. 솔직히 내가 태권도를 통해 얻은 것은 태권도를 하며 가져야 할 존경심과 명예로움이었다. 나는 선생님께 절을 해야 했고, 그 시간에 잡담을 했다면 선생님은 고함을 쳤을 것이다. 잘못을 저질렀을 때 벌받는 행위가 오직 ‘방과 후 남기’였다면, 그걸 넘어서는 이 극도의 엄격한 분위기를 나는 좋아했다(당시엔 반기지 않았지만 지금 와 생각해 보면 기억에 남고 현재 내 삶에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 무의식적으로 깨닫는다). 또 내가 태권도를 좋아하는 이유는, 많은 각목을 격파하고 첫 번째 트로피를 차지했기 때문이다. 처음은 늘 강렬하다. 은메달, 동메달, 금메달을 1개씩 순서대로 얻었다. 그것들을 찾아야겠다. 지금은 어디있는지 모르겠다.(미소)

You tend to use dense beats or witty rhythms. You tried to comfort yourself and your fans through the lyrics of ‘Dr. Whoever’. In conclusion, what does music mean to you, and what is communication for?
Music Music for me is my absolute comfort medicine. It is the only thing that puts me in a good mood. I can’t really stand still and quietness in a room. I need music, even if it’s calm music – music just influences my life 24/7. Music is just communication for communications it’s just another way to communicate to human beings. I can’t talk to every person in the entire world, but I can just give myself to my music and make sure the songwriting is true to who I am. Hopefully it influences and helps other people. Music is the only way I can communicate to other people.
밀도 있는 비트나 재치 있는 리듬을 사용하는 경향이 있다. ‘Dr. Whoever’의 노랫말을 통해 자신과 팬들을 위로하고자 했다고. 결국 당신에게 음악은 어떤 의미이고, 소통은 무엇을 위한 것인가.
내게 음악은 절대적 위안을 주는 ‘약’이다. 나를 기분 좋게 만드는 유일한 것. 방 안에 가만히 있을 수 없다. 잔잔한 음악일지라도 음악이 꼭 필요하다. 음악은 하루 24시간 내내 내 삶에 영향을 미친다. 음악은 소통을 위한 수단일 뿐이며, 인간과 소통하고자 하는 또 다른 방법이다. 전 세계 모든 사람과 이야기할 수는 없지만 내 음악에 진정한 내 자신을 담아 표현할 수 있고, 내가 누구인지 스스로 확인하는 창구가 되기도 한다. 나뿐 아니라 이걸 듣는 사람들도 어떤 기운을 받고 도움이 되길 바라는 마음이다. 음악은 내가 타인과 소통하는 유일한 방법이다.
