한국의 많은 아티스트 역시 당신에게 많은 영감을 얻는다. 어떤 말을 해줄 수 있을까.
In Korea, you influenced many artists. Any advice you want to give to the young artists in Korea?
“Live yours, innit.” 내 조언은 명료하다. 내가 누군가에게 충고할 수 있는 사람인지는 확신할 수 없지만 자신에게 솔직하라고 말하고 싶다. 내가 당당할 수 있는 건, 내가 처음으로 돌아가 친구들이 카메라를 잡고, 무일푼으로 음악을 만들어도 당시 런던의 셰퍼드부시에 사는 젊은 남자라면 내가 정확히 보여줬다는 것이다. 나는 내가 태어난 곳이 어떻게 생겼는지, 어떤 느낌인지 과장해 보여줬다. 간접적으로라도 그곳이 어떨지 내 음악을 듣고 상상해 보길 바란다.
“Live Yours, innit.” You know i keep the advice brief, I’m not really an advisor. Live Yours, which is my slogan and you can interpret it the way you want to interpret it but it’s just like be true to yourself. I think what’s cool about my come up is that I stripped it back and just had my friend behind the camera, no budget and just showed exactly what it was like for me at the time in London city as like a young guy and you could really see it. I kind of exaggerated what it would look like or feel like to be where I’m from. Maybe just exaggerate that as well so we can get a feel of what it’s like to be out there because a lot of people will never get to travel over there but they definitely would be interested to see what it’s like.
웰던과의 첫 만남이자 첫 촬영을 위해 서울을 방문했다. 패션 브랜드와의 협업을 위해 가장 필요한 건 무엇일까.
You came to Seoul to shoot a project WE11DONE. What is essential for you to collaborate with a fashion brand or any typical brand?
직접 와서 보니 서울은 패션에 무척 앞서 있다. 특히 웰던은 마케팅이 남다르다고 느꼈다. 서구권과 다른 문화와 언어로 살고있는 이곳은 많은 사람이 영어를 이해하지 못할지라도 패션을 통해 의사소통이 가능하다는 장점이 있다. 내가 입는 옷으로 그들과 소통할 수 있고, 당신이 무엇을 입고 있는지 내가 눈치채거나, 그걸 연결 고리로 또 다른 이야기를 나눌 수 있다. 이제 우린 웰던이라는 공통분모가 생긴 셈이다.
Seoul is a bit advanced in fashion, in like marketing, all of these things – it was a bit like on steroids. So with the fashion ting, especially somewhere like Seoul, where a lot of people might not understand English, I know I can always rely on fashion to communicate. I can talk to them with what i wear and say i know what you’re on, or i relate to you – or we’re the same in this way or what kind of person i am by what i’m wearing. It kind of just comes naturally.
세상 모든 삶은 대단한데, 실상은 다 비슷하다. 가장 평범한 것에서 최고의 안락함 을 추구하는 게 어쩌면 인류애적 궁극의 목표가 아닐까 생각한다. 꿈이 뭔가.
Every life in the world is great, but in reality, they are all similar. I think that perhaps the ultimate goal of humanity is to pursue the greatest comfort in the most ordinary things. What is your dream?
매일 다음 날 아침에 일어나는 것. 나는 꿈을 꾼다. 우리가 상황을 변화시키는 것 조차 점차 변화하고 있다. 그리고 이건 보너스다, 분명. 다행스럽게 내 꿈은 허황 된 것도, 물질적인 것도 아니다. 설령 그렇다 해도 나는 이미 물질적인 부를 모두 이뤘다. 이제 내 꿈은 아주 단순하게도 그냥 살아남는 것이다. 다른 건 없다.
Just to wake up tomorrow. I already have my dream. To change our situation and the situation has been changed now so everything else is just a bonus. Luckily thank god, my dream wasn’t nothing crazy or too material, and even if it was I’ve already achieved all the material. Now my dream is just very simple and just to stay alive. There’s nothing else to it.
