소비에트사회주의공화국연방이었던 러시아는 지금까지도 문화 예술에 사회주의가 만연하다. 1991년 해방됐지만 당시 홍수처럼 몰려온 미 서구주의 문화는 이러한 사회주의와 뒤섞였고 지금까지도 젊은 세대는 격동의 시대를 보내고 있다고 한다. 그러나 다양한 문화가 혼재되어 오히려 자유로운, 그래서 더 순수하다고 말할 수 있는 러시아 패션에는 우리가 전에 본 적 없던 잠재력이 있는 게 분명하다. 그 새로움과 젊음, 에너지를 발판으로 완성된 러시아 패션위크의 대표 디자이너 2명을 소개한다.

알렉산더 아루티노브Alexander Arutynov는 조지아에서 태어나 패션을 공부했고, 조지아 대신 러시아로 자리를 옮긴 뒤 두 번째 컬렉션을 선보였다. 과장된 헤어, 메이크업과 드레스 차림을 한 디바의 음악이 울려퍼진 쇼장은 시공간도 잊을만큼 몽환적인 분위기로 관객을 압도했다. 우아하면서도 아방가르드한 드레스, 연이어 등장한 1980년대 스포츠 유니폼에서 비롯한 미니드레스와 보디슈트를 보고 있노라면 1960년대를 지배한 팝아트와 1980년대의 대담한 애슬레틱 무드, 2019년식 러시아의 젊음을 한데 마구 합친 것처럼 보였다. 또 그는 모델 오른손에 꽃송이를 들게 한다든지, 인형을 안고 걸어 나오게 한다든지, 우주 행성 펜던트의 귀걸이와 목걸이를 더하고, 곳곳에 옛 소비에트 사회를 지칭하는 URSS(Union of Soviet Socialist Republics)를 프린트한 디테일로 괴짜다운 판타지마저 가미했다.

알렉산더 아루티노브가 대담한 드레스 룩을 내세운 것과 달리 레드 셉템버Red September는 우리가 일상에서 편하게 입을 수 있는 컨템퍼러리 패션에 대한 재해석으로 도전장을 내밀었다. 이탈리아 피렌체의 폴리모다를 졸업한 레드 셉템버의 디자이너 올가 바슈코바Olga Vasyukova는 스트리트 웨어와 로큰롤, 건축적인 실루엣이 한데 어우러진 컬렉션을 선보였다. 어깨 부분을 모두 각진 형태로 통일하거나 어깨선을 부풀려 건축적 조형미를 살리고 로큰롤 룩의 시그너처 아이템인 레더 팬츠와 바이커 재킷을 적절히 배치했는데, 디자인적으로나 문화적으로 모두 생소한 이 조합은 신선하다 못해 순수하다고 느낄 정도였다. 우리 눈에 익숙한 듯 익숙지 않은 레드 셉템버의 컬렉션은 격동적인 러시아 패션의 현재를 대변한다고 말할 수 있다.

Although the Soviet Union fell in 1991, its influence is still prevalent in the art and culture of Russia. American culture that was first introduced after the fall is now blending with the existing culture, showing the young generation the start of new era. Mixture of contrasting cultures brought about the current Russian fashion, full of potentials and infinite possibilities that we have never seen before. Here we introduce two Russian fashion designers, leading the Russian fashion into the new age.

Alexander Arutynov, a fashion designer from Georgia, launched his second collection in Russia. At the show, the diva’s music resonated with exaggerated hair, make up and dress, overwhelming the audience with a dreamy atmosphere. An elegant, yet avant-garde dress was followed by a mini dress and a body suit inspired by the 80’s athletic uniform. The 60’s pop art, the 80’s bold athletic mood and the Russia’s youthfulness from the 2019 could be seen all in one place. He also added the space planet pendant earring and the necklace. Models walked with a flower on their right hand or with a doll in their arm. USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) was regularly printed on each garments, adding an eccentric and a fantasy scenery.

Unlike Alexander Arutynov who is bold in his approach to his design, Red September, a Russian designer, reinterpreted the contemporary fashion design to make it more approachable. Olga Vashukova, a Red September designer and a graduate of Polymoda in Florence, Italy, showcased a collection of streetwear with Rock’n’Roll and architectural silhouettes. Both angular and inflated shoulder forms were incorporated to accentuate the architectural silhouettes. Signature looks of Rock’n’Roll, leather pants and the biker jackets, were also shown. This unusual mixture of Rock’n’Roll and architectural silhouettes can be said to represent the current Russian fashion trend.
